The Ebonyi State Government has approved over ₦500 million for the sponsorship of Muslim pilgrims to this year’s Hajj in Mecca.
This decision announced on Saturday, 8 February 2025, has sparked debates, considering the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
The allocation, aimed at supporting intending pilgrims from the state, aligns with similar efforts by other Nigerian states and the federal government to ease the financial burden on Muslim faithful undertaking the religious obligation.
Recall that in March 2024, the Federal Government approved a ₦90 billion subsidy to reduce Hajj fares nationwide, while states such as Kano and Kebbi also provided financial assistance to their pilgrims.
The move demonstrates the government’s commitment to religious inclusivity.
However, some residents and analysts argue that such a substantial sum could be better utilized to address critical infrastructure deficits, healthcare, and education, especially at a time when many citizens are struggling with rising costs of living.
Government officials, in response, maintained that the sponsorship is part of its social responsibility to support religious activities and ensure that Muslim citizens who cannot afford the trip on their own have the opportunity to fulfill their religious obligations.
