Ebonyi State Government has revealed that very soon residents of Abakaliki metropolis and other local government areas of the State will enjoy stable, clean and safe water supply.
This was made known by Hon. Francis Nwaze, Special Assistant on Media to Umahi.
He gave the assurance when he visited the Oferekpe Water Scheme in Ikwo Local Government of the State. The scheme is said to be the largest in the southern part of the country and was recently revived by the State Government under Engr David Umahi, FNSE, FNATE.
He said the Ebonyi State Government under Governor David Umahi has embarked on massive construction of water plants in the state to provide access to clean drinking water. When he (Mr. Nwaze) contacted the Special Assistant to the Governor on Water Resources, Hon Engr. Franklin Chikaodi, further details on the progress of work done in the water schemes Mr. Nwaze said:
“First, there is Ezillo Water Scheme which is one of the five (5) major water schemes designed to treat, supply and reticulate good and portable water to the good people of Ebonyi state. The scheme was designed to treat and supply 50,000 cubic meters of water per stream day, it’s meant to supply water to abakaliki and it’s environs. Currently it’s in full completion and two contractor, Ovamann Pumps Limited in charge of all mechanical repairs and maintenance and Elizar construction company Ltd in charge of civil repair works and cleaning are there. The scheme will start working soonest as the governor has ordered importation of new pumps and change of Dilapidated valves on the riser main (pipeline) taking water to Abakaliki”.
“The Ivo Water Scheme was designed to treat and supply 15,000 cubic meters of water per stream day if in full operation and it’s meant to reticulate water around Ishiagu and it’s environs.
“Currently the scheme is under construction by a reputable construction company and is about 80 percent completed.
“Governor Umahi is determined to provide water in all the Local Government Areas of the State.
“There is Ukawu Water Scheme, the scheme was designed to treat and supply 100,000 cubic meters of water per stream day if in full operation and it is meant to reticulate water around Ukawu, and entire Onicha L.G.A and beyond.
“It is almost ready and awaiting inauguration latest January.
“We are eternally grateful to Governor Umahi for these timely interventions in a critical areas like water which is essential for existence”, he said, adding “Chief Sunday Inyima, the Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources is working tirelessly to deliver on the mandate of portable water to the good people of Ebonyi State as directed by Governor Umahi”.
