The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Prof. Taiwo Oyedele, has clarified that under Nigerian tax law, income is taxable regardless of whether it is earned through legal or illegal means.
Speaking on Monday, Oyedele explained that the law does not distinguish between lawful and unlawful earnings when it comes to taxation.
“If you’re doing runs, it means you’re rendering a service. Therefore, you’re liable to pay tax. Tax law doesn’t care if it’s legal or illegal,” he said.
Oyedele added that the principle aligns with global tax practices, where all income is subject to tax, with questions of legality handled separately by law enforcement agencies.
He emphasized that the committee’s ongoing reforms are aimed at simplifying Nigeria’s tax systemand ensuring fairness in compliance.
