The Osun State Government has appointed Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund.
The announcement, made on October 22, 2025, by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Prince Kola Adewusi, marks part of the government’s broader reform to overhaul the state’s sports infrastructure and financing framework.
The trust fund, according to the government, is designed to provide a permanent structure for sports financing, ensuring that Osun’s sporting projects no longer depend on irregular interventions.
Explaining the rationale behind Davido’s appointment, Adewusi said the government intends to leverage the music star’s global influence, vast network, and philanthropic reputation to attract private sector investors and international sponsors to the state’s sports initiatives.
He noted that Davido’s brand power could help reposition Osun as a hub for youth engagement, talent discovery and international sporting events.
“Davido’s global reach and proven ability to mobilize support make him a valuable asset in our vision to modernize Osun’s sports sector,” Adewusi said.
Davido, who hails from the Adeleke family of Ede, reportedly accepted the appointment “without hesitation,” pledging to contribute meaningfully to youth empowerment through sports.
However, the announcement has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians.
Supporters view the appointment as a bold and innovative step that blends celebrity influence with governance, while critics question whether Davido possesses the technical and administrative expertise required for the role.
Others have also pointed out possible nepotism concerns, given his family ties to Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Despite the controversy, stakeholders say the appointment could prove beneficial if Davido functions as a strategic ambassador, backed by a capable technical team to manage daily operations.
