Public Questions Priorities as Minister Clarifies Khaki Remains Pending Review

By Princely Onyenwe | News Desk

ABUJA — The Federal Government has been forced to clarify its position on the proposed replacement of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) iconic khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric after the announcement triggered widespread criticism, intense social media debate and mixed reactions from Nigerians at home and abroad.

The controversy erupted after the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, during an interview on Channels Television, indicated that Adire would become the new NYSC uniform as part of sweeping reforms approved for the 53-year-old scheme.

Within hours, the proposal dominated discussions across X, Facebook and other social media platforms, with many Nigerians questioning why government appeared focused on changing uniforms instead of addressing persistent concerns over corps members’ security, welfare, delayed allowances, and the future of the scheme itself.

Faced with the backlash, the minister issued a clarification, stressing that his comments had been misconstrued. He explained that Adire and Ankara were mentioned merely as examples of proposals under consideration and emphasized that no final decision has been taken on any new fabric or design for the NYSC uniform.

Public Reactions:

Public opinion has remained sharply divided.
Many critics argued that the khaki uniform has become one of the strongest symbols of national unity and should not be replaced. Others questioned whether Adire, traditionally associated with Yoruba cultural heritage, should become the national attire of an institution representing every part of Nigeria.

Several social media users also faulted the timing of the proposal, insisting that reforms should focus on improving corps members’ welfare, security and employment opportunities rather than redesigning uniforms. Some described the proposal as “misplaced priority,” while others argued that changing the uniform would do little to solve the pressing challenges confronting the NYSC.

However, supporters of the proposal say adopting locally produced Adire could stimulate Nigeria’s textile industry, create jobs, reduce dependence on imported fabrics and keep government spending within the domestic economy. They argue that embracing indigenous fabrics would also promote Nigerian culture and manufacturing.

Speaking further, an integral source from the NYSC who pleaded to remain anonymous, told 9News that the idea , though yet to be clarified by the Minister, will not add any iota of improvement either to the NYSC or the Country at large . It will rathe disunite and disintegrate the unity and oneness established by its legal framework existing in the national service . Meanwhile Adire is core Yoruba and on this therefore other tribal fabrics will be cheated and their tribes will feel disenfranchised and hated, she concluded.

Despite the minister’s clarification, the proposal has continued to generate national conversation, with many Nigerians urging the Federal Government to engage stakeholders before taking any decision capable of altering one of the country’s most recognizable national symbols.

The government maintains that broader NYSC reforms—including improving employability, entrepreneurship, national integration and service delivery—remain its primary focus, and has appealed to Nigerians not to allow the uniform debate to overshadow those objectives.
