The Federal Government says it has reconstructed more than 10 bridges in every state of the federation in the last three years.
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, disclosed this on Sunday at a stakeholder engagement and road project flag-off in Lagos.
Umahi said over 260 emergency road and infrastructure projects had also been completed nationwide.
He said more than ₦250 billion had been spent on the projects.
The minister said the Tinubu administration had strengthened measures to ensure greater transparency in federal projects.
He disclosed that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) was invited to inspect projects and procurement processes.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was also invited to provide oversight, he added.
On the Eko Bridge rehabilitation, Umahi described the bridge’s condition as terrible.
He said a total closure would have caused major disruption, forcing the government to restrict the shutdown to part of the carriageway.
According to him, engineers monitor the bridge crack daily and have confirmed that it is not worsening.
Umahi said the immediate repair would involve reinstalling about seven piles and installing a new pile cap around the affected section.
The temporary solution is expected to last between 15 and 20 years.
He said a permanent rehabilitation plan was being developed by Nigerian structural engineers in collaboration with foreign experts.
The permanent work will involve lifting affected bridge spans, removing damaged pile caps and piers, and installing new structures.
Umahi also explained the role of 40 guards deployed to protect the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
He said they would tackle hawking, loitering, commercial motorcycle operations and refuse dumping along the highway.
The minister urged the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to intensify efforts to protect strategic infrastructure.
He also called for action against illegal parking and other forms of road abuse.
Umahi said the Federal Government remained committed to protecting critical infrastructure and maintaining federal highways.
