FG’s Protest Of ICC Probe: A Threat To Accountability and Justice – By Muhammad Salis Sulaiman

The Federal Government’s (FG) recent protest against the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) probe into the Nigerian Army’s activities has sparked widespread concern among human rights activists, civil society organizations, and the international community.

The ICC’s investigation, which was announced in March 2020, aims to examine allegations of war crimes and human rights abuses committed by the Nigerian military in its fight against Boko Haram insurgents in the north-eastern region of Nigeria.

However, the FG has vehemently opposed the ICC’s probe, arguing that it is an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and an attempt to undermine the country’s judicial system.

In a strongly-worded statement, the FG accused the ICC of overstepping its bounds and attempting to impose its jurisdiction on Nigeria without the country’s consent.

But human rights activists and civil society organizations have dismissed the FG’s claims, arguing that the ICC’s probe is a necessary step towards ensuring accountability for human rights abuses and war crimes committed in Nigeria.

The FG’s protest is a clear indication that they are trying to cover up the atrocities committed by the Nigerian military.

The ICC’s probe is a welcome development, and we urge the FG to cooperate fully with the investigation.”The ICC’s investigation is not the first time that the Nigerian military has faced allegations of human rights abuses.

In 2015, Amnesty International released a report detailing widespread human rights abuses committed by the Nigerian military, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and enforced disappearances. Despite these allegations, the Nigerian government has consistently failed to investigate and prosecute those responsible for these crimes.

The ICC’s probe is seen as a last resort to ensure accountability and justice for victims of human rights abuses. The FG’s protest of the ICC probe has also sparked concerns about Nigeria’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law.

The ICC’s investigation is a test of Nigeria’s willingness to uphold its international obligations and ensure accountability for human rights abuses. As the ICC’s probe continues, it remains to be seen how the FG will respond.

Will they continue to protest and obstruct the investigation, or will they cooperate fully and allow justice to take its course? Only time will tell.

However, one thing is clear: the ICC’s probe is a necessary step towards ensuring accountability for human rights abuses and war crimes committed in Nigeria. The FG’s protest should not be allowed to undermine this important investigation.
