Finally, FEC Approves New Teachers’ Retirement Age

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Wednesday, has finally approved the new teachers retirement age under the harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers Bill, 2021.

Disclosing this to State House correspondents at the end of FEC meeting in Abuja, Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu,  said the bill also seeks to give legal backing to new measures by the current administration to enhance the teaching profession in the country.

With the approval, the Federal Government is set to send the bill to the National Assembly. The bill, among other recommendations, seeks to change the retirement age of teachers in the country from 60 to 65. It also seeks to change the years of service for teachers from 35 to 40.

The FEC meeting, presided over President Muhammadu Buhari, was the first in 2021.
