Spanish Emergency Service on Sunday said a fire that broke out in a Madrid nursing home killed two women and injured 18 others.
Firefighter Jose Luis Castillo made this known in a video posted by Madrid’s emergency services on X, noting that the fire broke out at around 0600 GMT in a room on the first floor of the residence which was home to 39 people.
Castillo stressed that one woman who was injured is in critical condition due to burns while the rest were taken to hospital with moderate or light injuries, mostly due to smoke inhalation.
Reacting to the incident, Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida wrote on X that the cause of the blaze is still being investigated, as Spanish media revealed that the women who died were in their 80s.
