President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has summoned the first Council of State meeting since he took over the affairs of the country in May, 2023.
The meeting, which was scheduled for Tuesday 13th August 2024 at the State House in Abuja, was to discuss issues ranging from the last End bad governance protest during which scores reportedly died, to issues on the state of the economy and food inflation in the country.
All the former Presidents and Heads of State of Nigeria such as Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari were expected to be in attendance.
It is expected that the Council would discuss other issues bordering on national security and the way forward for the country in terms of an acceptable people’s democratic constitution as well as a workable system of government in such a diverse country as ours.
Recall that the former UN Secretary, Emeka Anyaoku had led a team recently to President Tinubu at the Villa during which the team asked for a review of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to pave way for people’s democratic constitution which should be subjected to a national referendum.
Anyaoku posited that the existing constitution of the country lacked capacity to take the country to the promised land, saying it was responsible for the current socio economic challenges in the country.
Speaking to Mr President, Anyaoku said “we have come to appeal to you to send to the national assembly the president’s executive bill which would call for two important measures, first, the convening of the constituent national assembly with the mandate to produce a draft people’s democratic constitution which should be deliberated upon and to be approved by a national referendum after which the President would sign it into law as the genuine legitimate Nigerian people’s constitution”.
Nigerians have started wondering what the real motives of the people behind the protest were in the northern part of the country as protesters were seen carrying Russian Flags all over the place. They were calling for the Military to take over from the civilian government under the leadership of President Tinubu who they said was the cause of the hunger in the land.
Just as the Russian government has dissociated itself from the call, the Nigerian army has also indicated its resolve to continue to support the democratically elected government in Nigeria. The protesters who carried the Russian flags during the protest were arrested together with the tailor who sowed the flags for them. They are being presently interrogated to know the people who were behind the treason.
