FLOOD: NEDC Begins Drainage Evacuation, Set To Evacuate 1m Meters

In response to the escalating flood crisis that has severely impacted local communities in Yobe State, the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) has initiated a drainage desiltation and evacuation operation across various Local Government Areas in the state.

The initiative, launched earlier this week, aims to address the frequent and severe flooding that has plagued the northeast region, causing significant disruption to daily life and damaging property.

According to NEDC’s managing director and Cheif Executive Officer, (CEO) Mohammed G. Alkali, the project encompasses the clearance of one million meters of drainage systems.

The initiative, he said, is expected to alleviate some of the flooding issues while also creating job opportunities and promoting healthier communities.

Also during an inspection in Maiduguri, Mr. Alkali emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that “the consequences of global warming associated with flooding are worrisome and detrimental to human health. It is crucial for NEDC to collaborate with the six state governors in the region to ensure a safer environment.”

Similarly, in Buni Yadi, the headquarters of Gujba LGA, the Yobe State Coordinator, Dr. Ali Abbas, observed the ongoing work at several critical points, including the General Hospital and the State Low Cost area.

Represented by Ali Mai Gangaran, he revealed that the commission is working in conjunction with the state ministry of environment, Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, (YOSEMA), and local leaders to evacuate approximately 10,000 meters of drainage systems in Buni Yadi and Buni Gari towns.

He added that the project would be extended to other local government areas.

He noted also that it is a direct response to the increasing impact of floods on residents, with many facing health risks and property damage due to inadequate drainage systems.

Yobe State has consistently being listed among the most hit states by flooding in Nigeria for several years.

Recent reports indicated that over 50,000 people were displaced and several deaths were recorded in the state.

Other disasters in the state that needs intervention includes survivors of the frequent terrorist attacks in the state.
