Four Things We Learnt As Super Eagles Qualify For AFCON 2019

On Saturday, Nigeria played a 1-1 with South Africa at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Samuel Kalu’s cross was deflected in, before the Bafana Bafana equalized with a well-worked goal.

The result however ensured the Super Eagles qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

So, what are the things we learnt from the game?

1. The African champions are back: Nigeria have qualified for the tournament for the first time in six years. They won it in 2013, but failed to qualify for the next two editions in 2015 and 2017.

2. Rohr has to be more reactive: To start with, this game did not need a three-man defense. And when that was obvious during the game, the German failed to make quick changes, especially with Iheanacho and Iwobi not at the races.

3. Midfield hard men missed: The Eagles were without Wilfred Ndidi, John Mikel Obi and Onazi Ogenyi. John Ogu and Oghenekaro Etebo didn’t quite provide the steel needed to keep the South Africans at bay.

4. Between South Africa and Libya: Nigeria have qualified for the AFCON with a game to spare. And it is against the group’s whipping boys, Seychelles. The more significant fixture will be between South Africa and Libya for the second ticket from the group.
