The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has appealed to motorists to refrain from driving, or reduce speed during heavy rainfall to minimise accidents.

Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, Wasiu Ogunmefun, made the appeal while speaking to reporters on Wednesday in Ota, as he identified excessive speeding as one of the risk factors contributing to accidents as well as unnecessary loss of lives.

The unit commander also emphasised the need for motorists to park in a safer place during heavy rainfall because of poor visibility which the commander said sometimes results in accidents.

He stressed that it was wrong to start looking for a mechanic when vehicles break down instead of towing them to remove the obstruction that may cause crashes from the road.

9News Nigeria reports that part of the statement revealed that; “We are appealing to motorists to maintain their vehicles by ensuring that their brake lights, lighting system and wipers are working well.

“In addition, drivers of any broken down vehicles should use caution signs at enough distance to give a warning to oncoming vehicles,” he said.

Ogunmefun reiterated the FRSC ‘s commitment to ensuring safety of lives and property during, before and after the rainy season, as he enjoined drivers to embrace defensive driving during the rainy season to prevent accidents.

The rainy season sets in April and ends October across the country.
