Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, Ghana’s former First Lady, has passed away at the age of 76.
Nana died on Thursday October 23, in Acrra. She was the wife of the late President Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana’s First Leader under the 4th Republic, who died in November 2020.
Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings was the country’s longest serving First Lady and a towering figure in Ghana’s political history and the women’s movement.
She served as First Lady from 1981-2001 and became one of the most influential advocates for women’s participation in governance and politics.
In 2016, Nana Konadu made history as the first former first lady to run for president in Ghana after breaking away from her husband’s party to form hers.
Born November 17, 1948, she played a pivotal role in shaping policy direction on women’s economic and political empowerment, most notably through the 31st December Women’s Movement, which she led for decades.
