A senior aide to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has declared that Afrobeats star David Adeleke popularly known as Davido, will no longer be allowed to perform in Edo State for the remainder of governor’s tenure.
The governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media, Apostle Kassy Chukwu, made the declaration in a video shared by Peniel Television, on Thursday amid ongoing dispute between Davido and Okpebholo over the singer’s involvement in the Osun governorhip election.
According to the governor’s aide, Davido has been “banned” from performing in the state over comments he made about the governor and his family during the political dispute that followed the recent governorship election in Osun State.
“You have been banned from coming to Edo State to perform. We don’t want to see you in Edo again”, Chukwu said in the video.
He accused the singer of disrespecting Governor Okpebholo and warned that the administration would not tolerate such conduct.
He also claimed that many youths in Edo State were angered by Davido’s remarks and cautioned the singer against returning to the state.
“Edo youths are angry. They said if they catch you again, nobody should bring Davido to come and perform in any place again in Edo State”, he said.
Chukwu further alleged that Davido circulated a manipulated version of the governor’s West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result in social media and warned him against making similar posts in future.
The development comes amid a public disagreement as Governor Okpebholo had criticised Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle, over his dancing style and conduct in office while campaigning in the state.
In response, Davido shared what he claimed was Okpebholo’s WAEC result on his Instagram Story, sparking widespread reactions online, however, Davido later defended his actions during an interview, insisting he had no reason to apologise, arguing that he had only shown Osun residents the academic record of a governor who had travelled to the state to campaign against his uncle.
He also criticised Okpebholo for leaving Edo State to participate in Osun election campaign and questioned the legitimacy of his electoral mandate.
