Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang is calling on the Federal Government intervention through utilization of available ecological funds to reclaim mining ponds that have become life-threatening hazards across communities in the State.
Mutfwang made this appeal during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, at his office in Abuja.
According to a statement by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, on Thursday August 15, 2024, Governor Mutfwang says the State is hopeful of securing ecological interventions including funds to remediate the hazards inflicted on the state by virtue of mining activities.
Mutfwang highlighted Plateau State’s significant contribution to Nigeria’s mineral sector but expressed concern over the severe environmental damage caused by the mining activities, which have left hazardous ponds in many communities.
“We are hopeful through our partnership with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, we can secure Federal Government support to reclaim these dangerous sites. Restoring these ponds is crucial not only for public safety but also for the economic potential of Plateau State”, the Governor said.
He emphasized that reclaiming these areas is essential for maintaining the State’s vital role in Nigeria ‘s agricultural output and its potential to generate foreign exchange through agriculture.
He also advocated for enhanced collaboration between the Federal Government and the subnational entities in training Nigerian youths in gem cutting and polishing, which would contribute to the nation’s GDP.
