Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has made a significant move to reform the education sector by banning all forms of payments in primary and secondary schools, including PTA levies.
This decision aims to enforce compulsory school attendance for children of school age, ensuring that every child has access to quality education without financial burdens.
To support the smooth operation of schools, Otti introduced an imprest account system, providing school principals and head teachers with specific monthly allowances to manage school operations.
This system eliminates the need for additional financial contributions from parents, ensuring that schools remain adequately funded for their day-to-day activities.
The Governor emphasized that no parent or guardian should be charged any school fees in public schools, warning that strict enforcement of this policy will be in place.
Governor Otti warned that any attempts to extort money from parents or guardian will be met with severe consequences.
The policy is part of Otti’s broader efforts to reform the education sector in Abia State, allocating 35% of the state’s budget to education and health care.
