Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced an immediate ban on masquerade display across the state, citing rising concern over public safety, criminal infiltration, and disruptions of community peace.
The Governor issues the directivr during a security briefing in Uyo, where he expressed worry that certain groups had begun using masquerade processions as a cover to harass and intimidate residents, extort communities, and obstruct traffic in major towns.
“Let me say as the Governor of the state, we ban masquerades on our streets. They are using it to terrorize people, extort money and terrify innocent citizens in the state”, he said.
He emphasized that while the state respects cultural heritage, public order and safety must take priority.
