As 2024 draws to a close, Hon. Chike Okafor’s contributions to the Nigerian House of Representatives stand out as a testament to his dedication to public service and the development of both his constituency and the nation.

Representing Ehime Mbano/Ihitte Uboma/Obowo Federal Constituency of Imo State, Hon. Okafor has consistently championed impactful policies and initiatives that addresses pressing national and local issues.

Legislative Initiatives and Bills Sponsored

One of Hon. Okafor’s key accomplishments this year has been his active involvement in legislative processes. Among his notable efforts are:

•Addressing Fraudulent POS Transactions:

On November 27, 2024, Hon. Okafor presented a motion to enforce verifiable documentation for Point of Sale (POS) operators and fund recipients nationwide.

The initiative seeks to combat the rising wave of fraudulent activities associated with POS transactions.

Hon. Okafor had highlighted the vulnerabilities of undocumented POS operations, identifying them as channels for crimes such as identity theft, money laundering, and unauthorized financial dealings.

•Investigating the Mismanagement of the ANRiN Program:

On December 12, 2024, Rep. Okafor presented a motion leading to an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of $232 million (approximately ₦350 billion) allocated to the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) program.

He emphasized that the World Bank-funded initiative, rolled out in 12 states, was aimed at combating malnutrition but failed to deliver significant improvements in Nigeria’s nutrition indicators.

•Leadership in Nutrition and Food Security:

As chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Hon. Okafor inaugurated a Local Organizing Committee on Nutrition and Food Security on October 31, 2024, serving as a formal introduction to the National Summit on Nutrition and Food Security.

This initiative underlined his commitment to addressing hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria.

•Support for Tertiary Education:

On 2nd December 2024, Hon. Okafor actively participated in a public hearing organized by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund focused on an establishment bill.

The bill was a proposal of the establishment of a federal university in Okigwe Zone, as Hon. Okafor delivered a keynote address, where he emphasized the importance of legislative roles in community development and celebrated the initiative as a turning point for growth in the Okigwe Zone.

•Strategic Meeting on Food Security:

On November 19, 2024, Hon. Okafor held a strategic meeting with the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, His Excellency, Atiku Bagudu. Joined by the Committee Clerk, Mrs. Millicent Egenti, and the lead consultant, Dr. John Onyeokoro, the discussion centered on strengthening budgetary allocations for nutrition and food security initiatives.

Hon. Okafor described the meeting as “an opportunity to align legislative priorities with the executive’s plans for national food security.”

He also emphasized the need for adequate and sustained funding to tackle rising food costs, enhance agricultural productivity, and support vulnerable populations, particularly women and children at risk of malnutrition.

•Grand Challenges Nigeria:

Piloted by the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Grand Challenges Nigeria aims to align the country with global best practices in addressing pressing developmental problems.

Hon. Okafor in his keynote address, highlighted the committee’s strides since its creation in February 2024.

He also emphasized an inclusive approach that fosters collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.

Agricultural Empowerment Initiative

Hon. Chike John Okafor, Ph.D., in collaboration with the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, launched a comprehensive training and distribution program for farmers across his constituency.

The initiative, designed to empower farmers through hands-on training and the provision of high-yield plantain and banana stems, high-yield cassava stems, and hybrid palm seedlings, saw the supply of these scientifically developed varieties, ensuring resilience and higher agricultural output for farmers, significantly boosting local agricultural productivity and food security.

The intervention aligns with Hon. Okafor’s vision of strengthening the agricultural sector and promoting economic self-reliance within his constituency.

Recognition for Legislative Performance

The Federal House of Representatives Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, chaired by Hon. Chike John Okafor, Ph.D., was recognized as one of the top 10 performing committees in the Green Chamber, ranking 5th overall in the evaluation.

This acknowledgment evidently reflects the committee’s effectiveness in tackling critical national challenges and indicates Hon. Okafor’s leadership and commitment to impactful legislative processes.

Comprehensive Free Medical and Surgical Outreach

Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor, Ph.D., the representative of Obowo, Ihitte Uboma, and Ehime Mbano Local Government Areas in Okigwe South Federal Constituency, also continued his Comprehensive Free Medical and Surgical Outreach this year.

This outreach reaffirms Hon. Okafor’s commitment to addressing the healthcare challenges faced by his constituents by providing free access to life-saving medical interventions and surgical procedures.

Birthday Celebration and Recognition

On November 15, 2024, the Federal House of Representatives, led by Rt. Hon. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, extended warm felicitations to Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor, Ph.D., the representative of Okigwe South Federal Constituency and Chairman of the Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, on his birthday.

In a statement, the Speaker praised Hon. Okafor’s dedication to legislative excellence, impactful leadership in addressing nutrition and food security issues, and unwavering commitment to his constituents’ well-being.

From legislative chambers to the grassroots, Hon. Chike Okafor’s work throughout 2024 underscores his vision for a better Nigeria.

His active role in addressing critical issues such as nutrition, financial fraud, healthcare, and education highlights his dedication to transformative leadership.

Recognitions like his committee’s top-five performance ranking and the continued success of his community outreach programs demonstrate his unwavering commitment to national and constituency development.
