In a significant development, Nigeria has received approval from the United Nations to extend its continental shelf by 16,300 square kilometers, an area approximately five times the size of Lagos State. This achievement was marked by a presentation made to President Bola Tinubu by the High-Powered Presidential Committee (HPPC) on Nigeria’s Extended Continental Shelf Project.

The approval, based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, grants Nigeria sovereignty over this additional maritime territory, expanding its jurisdiction beyond the existing 200 nautical miles. The project, which commenced in 2009, has attained this significant milestone following years of committed scientific research and diplomatic negotiations.

In the presentation, Professor Larry Awosika, a marine scientist, and Surveyor Aliyu Omar, Secretary of the HPPC, detailed the extensive research and negotiations that led to the UN’s decision. Surveyor Omar highlighted the strategic importance of this development, which holds significant economic potential, including hydrocarbons, gas, solid minerals, and a wide variety of sedentary species.

The experts presented two options for Nigeria following the approval: finalizing the registration with the UN Secretary-General within a year, or acquiring additional data for a revised submission, which could take up to four years. Irrespective of the selected course of action, Nigeria will continue to uphold the recently approved region.

Professor Awosika emphasized the meticulous scientific research that underpinned Nigeria’s successful submission, noting the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding the sensitive data acquired during the surveys to protect Nigeria’s economic interests.

President Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the committee, acknowledging this as a significant achievement for Nigeria, achieved without conflict, and showcasing the country’s commitment to peaceful and strategic expansion. The President also referenced conversations with former President Muhammadu Buhari as well as international counterparts, underscoring the significance of cooperation within economic and maritime domains.

The successful extension of Nigeria’s continental shelf represents a major accomplishment for the country, expanding its maritime jurisdiction and unlocking new economic opportunities in the areas of hydrocarbons, gas, solid minerals, and marine life. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the HPPC team, who have worked tirelessly to secure this strategic advantage for Nigeria.
