A chaotic situation unfolded at Araromi Ilogbo Secondary School in Oko Afo, Lagos, as students of the school expressed their outrage over the tragic death of a fellow student who was reportedly beaten to death by a teacher.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday when the victim, identified as David Babadipo, was allegedly subjected to severe corporal punishment by a teacher named Oluwale.
It was revealed that the 16-year-old had been unwell for a few days before the incident and was rushed to a hospital after being beaten, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.
In video footage obtained by our correspondent at 9News Nigeria, numerous students from the school can be seen running frantically both within and outside the school premises.
In the background of the video, one of the students can be heard recounting that the deceased student had intended to step out to purchase something before he was allegedly assaulted by a teacher, ultimately leading to his untimely demise.
Responding to the video, a social media user by the name of Mama Sassy D remarked, “This is my vicinity. They have started rioting already. The said teacher might not survive this period.”
However, a user on Facebook named Esther Wusu disputed the claim that the student was beaten to death, stating that the name of the teacher mentioned was that of the school’s vice principal.
Esther Wusu wrote: “First and foremost, Mr Oluwale is a Vice Principal and he didn’t beat him for not paying attention in class because he doesn’t teach, he didn’t even beat him at all.
“That child has (sic) been sick since Tuesday and the parent didn’t take him to the hospital. It got worse yesterday afternoon after the break and they called his parent to come to pick him up.”
In the meantime, another Facebook user named Bangose Jide posted, “A teacher named Mr. Olawale, who is also a vice principal, beat David Babadipo, a 16-year-old student, to death at Araromi-Ilogbo Senior Secondary School, Oko-Afo.
“The teacher is named Mr Olawale, (a) vice principal. The case has been reported to the Morogbo Police Station at Badagry Expressway, Lagos State. David Babadipo was a native of Ipoti Ekiti State.”
The confirmation of whether the case was reported at the police station is still pending, as the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has not provided any information on the matter. Despite sending a text message to inquire about it, no response has been received up until the time of filing this report.
Attempts have also been made to reach out to the school for a comment on the situation.
