Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have launched an attack in Dapchi town, headquarters of Bursari local government area of Yobe State.
The attack started around 10pm on Saturday when the terrorists were seen storming into the town shooting sporadically.
The attack created panic in the community as hundreds of people ran into the bush for safety.
According to our sources, the terrorists went straight to a vigilante camp close to the main road when they stormed into the town.
They killed one vigilante and injured another who was shot twice during the incident.
Sources confirmed that the injured vigilante is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The terrorists have also burnt down one patrol vehicle belonging to the vigilantes and catered away with another.
The attack lasted for about an hour as residents from different locations in the town said they kept seeing bullets fire flying over their head in the sky.
“Our area was safe, there was little panic because we are not close to the attacked location,” a resident living in Lawanti area said to this reporter.
Another source who was among those that fled to the bush for safety said that they dispersed when they started hearing sounds of gunshots.
“When they enter the town, they started shooting recklessly. We had to run into the bushes for safety even though we know we might be falling into a trap,” he said.
He also noted that they spent the night in the bush and returned in the morning.
However, the sources also noted that the shooting stopped after an hour of intense shooting.
They confirmed also that there was no military or other security personnel presence during and after the attack.
Although camp has returned to the community in the morning, there is yet no official statement from both security agencies and government of Yobe State on the attack at the time of filling this report.
Dapchi has experienced relative peace in recent period, long after the famous Dapchi school attack eight years ago.
The attack was a tragic incident that occurred on February 19, 2018, when Boko Haram terrorists attacked the Government Girls Science and Technical College in Dapchi and abducted 110 schoolgirls aged 11-19 years old.
The abducted girls were taken from their school dormitory, and reports indicated that five girls died during the abduction.
One month later, 104 of the abducted girls were released. This fresh attack is a reminiscent of the 2018 school attack and abduction.
