…What you are doing is constitutional but you have to be orderly in your protest
The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi, on Monday, reassured #EndSARS protesters of his ever readiness to cooperate with the youth in securing their rights and protecting their future.
The Governor who referred to the youth as leaders of tomorrow who can do even better than the present leaders if given the opportunity explained that it is based on this that he decided to bring in youth into his cabinet. He noted that over 80% of his cabinet members are youth who are resourceful and committed in their official duties. “I want you to watch the next few days. I am going to implement everything I have told you here.
“You have achieved a lot for our nation, Nigeria. You have achieved a lot for Ebonyi State; we will be careful with our governance, you know in my cabinet, over 80% are youth because I know that the future belongs to you and I bought all of them brand new jeeps because I believe in the youth, I believe that you are very hardworking, I believe that you need the opportunity, if you have the opportunity, you will do much better than us”, he said.
The Governor equally appealed to the EndSARS protesters to be orderly in their protest. “I want to appeal to you, to be very orderly in your protest.
“You are fighting for your rights, you are fighting for our children, you are fighting for our future. What you are doing is constitutional but we must be orderly to get something out of it.
“One of the things I will take up with the Commissioner of Police and the Army Commander is to dismantle roadblocks in Ebonyi State.
“We will no longer tolerate the roadblocks at every post. What we will accept is that: Police stay by the side; when you suspect a vehicle, you stop the vehicle, you check the vehicle, you go away.”
Governor Umahi equally discouraged the protesters from agreeing to pay money to police officers who are officially doing their jobs. “Any policeman that asks you for money, I want you to resist that.
“Call me on phone. Don’t give money to any policeman again.”
The Governor equally addressed all issues raised by the protesters including setting up of judicial panel of enquiry, Setting up victims support fund, setting up of state trust fund, setting up special security and human right committee, human right complaint office, etc.
The Protesters who were visibly happy with the Governor and his remark seek the Governor’s consent on their planned candle night tonight in memory of those who were illegally killed by
the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad ,
SARS.
