The former Managing Director of Daar Communications and Chief Executive Officer of Hosamudia Farm, Pedro Obaseki, has disclosed that his assault by suspected thugs in Benin City, Edo State, was allegedly triggered by a public statement he made in London, the United Kingdom.
Obaseki, who was attacked on Sunday, said his interaction at the palace of the Oba of Benin revealed that the attackers were not acting on the direct orders of the monarch.
He disclosed that he was informed that the assault was connected to a remark he made during a public engagement in London, where he wished the people of Edo State long life and prosperity.
He added that he was told his offence was failing to specifically extend the goodwill message to the Oba of Benin.
Obaseki described the allegation as shocking, noting that he has spent between 35 and 40 years promoting and elevating Benin culture, including his role as a pioneer in the development of Nollywood.
Obaseki said: “From the countenance I met at the palace, it was clear that they did not send these people on this message. I am traumatised. I’m distraught.
“And I heard that my sin was that I went to London and in a public statement I said ‘may Edo people live long and prosper’ but instead I should have said that may the Oba live long and prosper.
“They said saying that is a cardinal sin in Benin for me who has elevated the culture of the Benin race in my 35 to 40 years as the pioneer of the present Nollywood.”
