Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to abolished the current operations of the Joint Admissions and Matriculating Board (JAMB) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) If elected President of Nigeria.

“The National Youth Service Corps, in its current form, will be scrapped.In its place,we will establish a two -year, voluntary National Jobs Corps that guarantees participants meaningful employment, practical skills, entrepreneurship support,and pathways into permanent careers”, he said.

Sowore added that universities, polytechnics and colleges of education should be allowed to admit qualified students directly based on merit without requiring candidates to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by JAMB.

According to him, the move would eliminate unnecessary bottlenecks and promote a fairer admission process.

He also proposed replacing the existing NYSC programme with voluntary two-year national service initiative that would focus on job creation, vocational training, entrepreneurship support and pathways to permanent employment for young Nigerians.

He maintained that admission into tertiary institutions should be handled directly by universities and other higher institutions without JAMB acting as intermediate.

Explaining the rationale behind the proposal, Sowore Insisted that young Nigerians need access to job and economic opportunities rather than compulsory government schemes.

The AAC presidential candidate argued that the reforms would modernize Nigeria’s education and youth development systems while creating more opportunities for graduates.

Sowore”s comments came barely a day after the Federal Executive Council approved a comprehensive overhaul of the NYSC scheme, the first major review of programme since its established in 1973.
