The recent expulsion of Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, a lady who has proven to be a non-academic student from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has sent a powerful message about the institution’s commitment to maintaining a conducive academic environment.
This decision has not only made the university community proud but has also reinforced the values of discipline, respect, and integrity that are essential in any academic setting. The incident that led to her expulsion involved an unprovoked assault on Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a respected lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies.
This act of aggression, starkly highlighted the need for strict adherence to the university’s disciplinary regulations.Chimamaka, who preferred to be addressed as “Pim Pim,” was engaged in recording a TikTok video during school hours when Dr. Okoye politely asked her to allow him to pass by, lightly touching her shoulder in the process.
Instead of responding with understanding, she reacted violently, assaulting the lecturer. This behaviour is not only unacceptable but also a clear violation of the university’s Student Disciplinary Regulations, particularly Regulation 4 (SDR), which outlines the consequences of fighting and other forms of misconduct.
The university’s management acted decisively in expelling her, as the punishment for such behaviour is clearly stated in the regulations. The expulsion of Chimamaka serves as a crucial reminder that the university is committed to upholding its standards and ensuring that all students understand the importance of maintaining decorum within the academic environment.
The overwhelming video evidence of the incident further underscores the gravity of her actions and the necessity for the university to take a firm stand. Her subsequent attempts to blackmail Dr. Okoye only revealed a deeper issue of character, demonstrating a lack of respect for authority and a willingness to manipulate the situation to her advantage.
Such behaviour is not only detrimental to the academic community but also poses a threat to the integrity of the educational system as a whole.By expelling Chimamaka, Nnamdi Azikiwe University has sent a clear message to all students: the institution will not tolerate any form of violence or disrespect towards its staff.

It also serves to protect the reputation of the university, ensuring that it remains a place of learning and growth, free from the disruptive influences of individuals who choose to act outside the bounds of acceptable behaviour.

The certificates that students aspire to earn are not merely pieces of paper; they represent a culmination of hard work, dedication, and, most importantly, character. Furthermore, it is essential for the Igbo community, particularly those who have recently relocated abroad, to recognize the importance of upholding the values of their culture while also embracing the standards of civility expected in academic environments.
Comments that seek to justify or downplay Chimamaka’s actions only serve to undermine the integrity of the educational system and reflect poorly on the community as a whole.
