Indonesia’s government has suspended the operating licence of TikTok after the platform allegedly failed to provide complete data on activities during the recent anti-government protests.
Authorities said the app only submitted partial information, despite a September 23 deadline to comply.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs accused TikTok of withholding traffic and monetisation data linked to its live-streaming feature, including accounts suspected of online gambling.
Officials described the move as necessary to protect national security and digital transparency.
TikTok, which has more than 100 million users in Indonesia, said it is working with authorities while prioritizing user privacy.
TikTok has faced a series of challenges in operating in Indonesia.
The videoo-sharing app temporarily suspended its live feature in August due to violent protests after the death of a man hit by a police vehicle.
On Monday, Indonesia’s antitrust agency fined TikTok $900,000 for failing to notify regulators in time about its acquisition of e-Commerce feature was also suspended by the government on 2023 after it moved to help small businesses.
It then bought a 75 percent stake in Tokopedia, Indonesia’s largest commerce platform, bringing together their shopping arms.
