It has been gathered that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed satisfaction with the electoral amendment bill transmitted to President Muhammadu Buhari by the National Assembly.Recall that the President had on November 29 sent a letter through his Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, to INEC and other critical stakeholders regarding the electoral amendment act.The bill involves two major amendments; the compulsory use of direct primaries by political parties to choose candidates for election and the provision to allow INEC to transmit election results electronically or decide otherwise. According to a source within the Presidency, INEC has advised the President to sign the electoral bill as amended by the National Assembly. The electoral body said it is satisfied with the bill, adding that the provisions in the bill would strengthen the electoral process and make future elections more credible as it will give the commission the power to review election results announced by its officials under duress.INEC also used the opportunity to commend the National Assembly for including the electronic transmission of results and the early nomination of candidates for elections.
