The Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu, Nigeria (AMEN), Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has claimed that former President Goodluck Jonathan lost the 2015 presidential election because he failed to heed his advice.
Mbaka said he had warned Jonathan to remove the then Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, but the former president allegedly ignored the recommendation.
The cleric made the remarks in a viral video while clarifying his earlier comments that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity has political undertones.
Recall that Mbaka had recently alleged that certain politicians were exploiting insecurity as part of efforts to undermine President Bola Tinubu, similar to what he claimed happened during Jonathan’s administration.
His comments sparked reactions on social media, with many users revisiting Mbaka’s role in the events leading up to Jonathan’s defeat in 2015.
Responding to the criticism, Mbaka insisted that Jonathan’s loss was not caused by him but by the former president’s refusal to follow what he described as divine counsel.
“Forget about what they are saying on social media. Former President Goodluck Jonathan was my friend; the situation is different,” Mbaka said.
“Jonathan didn’t fail because I failed him; he chose to fail. I told him what to do to win the election, but he refused.
“He failed because he disobeyed the advice of a man of God. I told him to remove Jega because Jega had already betrayed him, but he refused to do so,” the cleric stated.
