Kano lawmaker Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa has officially resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), hours after Kwankwasiyya faction of the party announced his expulsion.
In a statement on Sunday, the member representing Kiru/ Babeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives described the decision as a “rude shock” but said he had chosen to accept it “In good faith”
“The party does believe anybody has political value and comes short in treating people with respect they deserve at various level. This case is clear instance”, Jibrin declared.
“While I would have loved to stay in the NNPP and continue my service to our people and country despite differences issues, the party has made and announced a decision in good faith and without grudges. I beg the party to allow me also go in peace”, Kofa said.
The lawmaker defended remarks he made during a recent television interview, which the party leaders cited as grounds for his expulsion.
He insisted his comments did not amount to anti-party activity.
“I strongly believe the contest of the interview I granted a few days ago should not warrant such heavy penalty. It is in tandem with the core principles of our party which allow for dissenting views. For the purpose of emphasis, I stand by all my statements I made”, he stated.
Kofa criticized the process that led to his removal, alleging that he was denied fear hearing.
“No invitation was extended to me to explain myself by any organ of the party, thereby neglecting the principle of fear hearing, due process and justice that the NNPP itself demands from others” , he said.
Looking ahead, Jibrin said he would carefully weigh his options before deciding on his next political move.
“I welcome my supporters who wish to join me I. my new journey. But for those who choose to remain in NNPP, I hold no grudges. I will carefully weigh all options before me as I decide on my next political home. So help me God”, he said.
