. Kidnappers Face Death Sentence, Rapists Life Imprisonment

Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, as part of efforts to put criminal activities in check in the state, has signed a law which prescribes death sentence for convicted kidnappers and life imprisonment for rapists

Governor Bagudu assented the Model Penal Code 2021 to address the spate of kidnapping.

According to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rahmatu Adamu Gulma, kidnapping will be tried under Section 247 which specifies the death sentence.

Also, a statement signed by Bagudu’s spokesman, Abubakar Mu’azu Dakingari said rape cases will be tried under Section 259 sub-section 1 of the code under which offenders will face life imprisonment.

With the signing of the law by the governor, the Attorney General said Kebbi prisons will be less congested and therefore will give way for accelerated and speedy trials of criminal offences.
