Former Kano State Governor and former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has condemned recent comments made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir at an event in Kano.

Kwankwaso expressed concern over what he described as statements capable of promoting division and disunity in the country.

In a statement issued on Monday, the former governor said it was troubling that such remarks were coming from a religious leader of Sheikh Jingir’s stature and influence.

“At this critical moment in our nation’s history, statements that promote division and disunity must be firmly discouraged,” Kwankwaso said.

He stressed that political and religious leaders have a solemn responsibility to promote truth, foster unity and advance reconciliation, rather than make statements capable of undermining national cohesion.

Kwankwaso also distanced the people of Kano from the statements, insisting that the comments should not be interpreted as representing the position of the people of the state.

“Let it be clearly stated: the good people of Kano do not endorse or support these divisive remarks,” he said.

The former governor also referenced the 2027 general elections, describing them as an opportunity for Nigerians to assess the performance of the current administration and express their verdict at the polls.

According to him, Nigerians would have the opportunity to reward good governance and reject poor performance with their votes.

“The 2027 general elections will be an opportunity for Nigerians to reward good governance with resounding support and to reject poor performance at the polls. This administration has earned the latter,” Kwankwaso stated.

He urged political and religious leaders to exercise responsibility in their public statements and use their influence to promote peace, unity and reconciliation across the country.

Kwankwaso concluded by praying for the continued progress and unity of Nigeria.
