Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Ayodele Fayose, has said that inadequate electricity supply contributes to Nigeria’s population growth and hindering the country’s development.
Fayose made the comments while speaking on the challenges confronting Nigeria’s electricity sector, stressing the importance of reliable power supply to the country’s socio-economic development.
He was quoted as saying that “lack of electricity makes the population double in Nigeria,” a statement highlighting the broader consequences of inadequate electricity.
The REA Chairman’s statements focuses on concerns over the relationship between electricity access, economic opportunities, productivity and the quality of life of Nigerians.
Reliable electricity remains critical to businesses, industries, healthcare facilities, schools and households, particularly in rural communities where access to the national grid remains limited.
The Federal Government, through the REA and other stakeholders in the power sector, has continued to pursue initiatives aimed at expanding electricity access to underserved and unserved communities across the country.
However, challenges including inadequate generation and distribution infrastructure, financing constraints and limited access to electricity in rural areas continue to affect the pace of electrification.
