President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said religious institutions should play a greater role in supporting their members during difficult economic times.
Speaking on Thursday, the President urged Nigerians to rely on the support structures within their faith communities, noting that churches have a responsibility to care for their members.
He stressed that poverty and hunger predate his administration.
“Let your churches feed you. That’s why you are a member. Before I was born there was hunger. I don’t have control over the population,” Tinubu said.
He argued that hunger has long been a challenge in Nigeria and should not be attributed solely to his administration.
Tinubu also noted that population growth remains beyond the control of any individual leader, while emphasising the need for collective efforts involving government, religious organisations and communities to address socio-economic challenges facing the country.
