The Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) has commenced its annual legislative recess, with plenary sittings adjourned until Tuesday, September 29, 2026, following a resolution reached during Thursday’s sitting.
The announcement was made by the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Chike Olemgbe, Thursday, after members unanimously adopted the motion for the Assembly’s recess at plenary.
Before proceeding on recess, lawmakers passed the Imo State Data Protection Bill through its second reading. The bill, principally sponsored by Rt Hon Kennedy Ibeh and co-sponsored by 14 other lawmakers, seeks to establish a comprehensive legal framework for the protection, processing, storage and management of personal data within Imo State.
During deliberations, Deputy Speaker, Hon Chyna Iwuanyanwu, highlighted critical areas requiring further refinement, stressing the need to eliminate ambiguities and strengthen the proposed legislation before its final passage.
A petition through the Deputy Speaker Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu was also formally laid before the House for legislative consideration in accordance with the Assembly’s Standing Orders.
The lawmakers further conveyed an outstanding message of congratulation to the Governor Hope Uzodinma CON, through Hon Nze Ihezue’s motion commending Uzodinma’s administration’s extensive road construction and infrastructure renewal projects across the state, describing them as a major boost to economic development and improved connectivity. The bill was supported by all the honourable members present at the plenary.
The Leader IMHA, Chief Kanayo Onyemaechi, played a key legislative role in moderating proceedings and subsequently moved the motion for the adoption of the Assembly’s recess, which was unanimously approved by members.
Although plenary sittings have been suspended until September 29, the House noted that committee assignments and other essential legislative activities will continue throughout the recess, while Honourable Members and their legislative aides observe the scheduled legislative break.
The Assembly is expected to reconvene on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, to resume plenary and continue deliberations on pending bills, motions, petitions and other legislative business, including the Data Protection Bill.
