A middle-aged man, identified as Nwanna, has allegedly set his wife, Chioma Nwanna, ablaze during a domestic dispute at Eziezekwu village, Abagana, Njikoka local government area of Anambra State.
The tragic incident, which unfolded on Tuesday evening January 21, 2025, reportedly stemmed from suspicious of infidelity.
Commuinity sources revealed that Nwanna accused his wife of having an affair outside matrimony, after she returned home from an outing.
The confrontation escalated, and in a fit of rage, Nwanna allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire.
Chioma, who sustained severe burns, was rushed to a nearby hospital by concerned neighbours.
However, she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday January 22, 2025, leaving behind six children.
A resident who spoke anonymously recounted the horrifying scene.
“She came back in the evening and they started arguing. suddenly, he poured petrol on her and lit a match. It was shocking to see such thing happen in our community”
After the act, Nwanna reportedly turned himself in at the Abagana Divisional Police Station, confessing to the crime.
The Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect is currently in the custody of the police, and Investigation are ongoing.
“The suspect voluntarily presented himself at the station, and we are gathering fact to establish what led to the unfortunate event”, he said.
The tragic event has left the community in shock, with many calling for justice for late Chioma.
This incident further highlights the growing concerns on domestic violence and the need for strong measures to protect victims.
