U.S President Donald Trump has stated that the United States must be involved in selecting Iran’s next Supreme Leader following the death of long-time leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Trump warned that Washington would not accept successor who continues the policies of the late cleric.
He specifically rejected the likely succession of Mojteba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, calling him “unacceptable” and a “lightweight”.
President Trump emphasized that a future Iranian leader following Khamenei’s death policies could lead to renewed conflict with the United States.
The comments come amid heightened U.S-Iran tensions, as Iranian authorities delay announcing, a successor. While Trump insists on U.S involvement, the choice of Supreme Leader is normally an internal process governed by Iran’s religious and political institutions.
