The Senate is tackling one of its members Senator Abdurrahaman Sumaila Kawu, over claim of receiving N21 million as monthly salary and allowances.
Sumaila Kawu, of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) representing – Kano South Senatorial District had in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, said he receives N21 million as monthly take home in salaries and allowances.
The Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mohammed Shehu, had earlier said each Senator receives N1,063,860 million as salary and allowances per month.
However, In reaction to the claim, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu (APC Ekiti South), said the National Assembly receives only 1% of the federal budget, and that Kawu’s claim was not true.
The controversy around the alleged enormous pay of the National Assembly members came to the fore once again after former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the weekend said lawmakers fixed their own pay.
While the National Assembly refutes the claim by former President Obasanjo.
