The Speaker House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has withdrawn a contentious bill that sought to make voting compulsory for all eligible Nigerians.
The bill co-sponsored by lawmaker Daniel Asama, aimed to amend the Electoral Act 2022, to boost voters turnout.
However, the bill, sparked wide spread debate and criticism with many arguing that it would infringe on personal freedoms and be difficult to enforce.
According to Abbas media aide, Musa Krishi, the Speaker made the decision to withdraw the bill after consulting with stakeholders across the country.
In a statement Abass emphasized the importance of encouraging voter participation, citing examples of countries like Australia and Brazil, where compulsory voting has been successful but stressed that Nigeria must find its own unique path.
