NDLEA Advocates Drug Testing for NYSC Enrollees

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has called for the mandatory drug testing of all prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), made the call while addressing stakeholders at a recent event in Abuja.

He emphasized the need for preventive measures that would discourage drug use among young Nigerians, particularly those preparing to serve the nation under the NYSC scheme.

Marwa noted that the drug testing initiative, if adopted, would not only serve as a deterrent but also help in identifying and rehabilitating individuals struggling with substance abuse before they enter the service year.

“The NYSC represents a critical stage in the life of our youths and a key opportunity to instill discipline, patriotism, and healthy lifestyle choices. Mandatory drug testing for all prospective corps members will help promote these values and ensure a drug-free service year,” he said.

The NDLEA boss stressed that drug abuse remains a major public health and national security challenge in Nigeria, warning that young people are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of substance misuse.

If implemented, the drug test will become a prerequisite for participation in the NYSC orientation camp.
