Nigeria has received 170 citizenship applications from nationals of various countries of the world, according to the Minister of interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who revealed this during a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Nigerian Citizenship in Abuja.
A statement by Mary Ali, Assistant Director of Press and Public Relations, noted that the Minister emphasized citizenship as a privilege to be earned through integrity and good character.
Tunji-Ojo noted that citizenship of the world’s largest black nation is not for everybody.
“Anyone who holds the citizenship of our great country must be a person of strong character and impeccable integrity, reflecting the true values of Nigeria”, he declared.
According to the Minister, 170 applications will undergo rigorous scrutiny by a high-level panel made up of representatives from the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Immigration Services, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He urged thorough scrutiny of all applications and warned against attempts to obtain citizenship through illegal means.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed that the exercise align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prompting national integrity, security and prosperity.
