Military sources say terrorists stormed a battalion base in Rann, Kala Balge district, Borno State, in the early hours of Monday, killing at least two soldiers.
According to the sources, Boko Haram fighters set armoured tanks ablaze and made away with an unspecified quantity of ammunition during the raid.
They added that some soldiers attached to the battalion fled into neighbouring Cameroon after fierce fighting with the militants.
“There was another Boko Haram dislodgement on our base in Borno. The CIO Battalion in Rann, Kala Balge, was attacked by them. They killed two of our soldiers and injured many others. Some who managed to escape left their duty post and fled with their arms into Cameroon,” one source said.
The attack comes a few months after 22 soldiers, including a commander, were killed at a military base in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State.
Nigeria has battled Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East since 2009. While the military often claims the terrorists have been largely defeated, they have continued to launch deadly raids, killing thousands and displacing millions in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states.
Troops have repeatedly complained of inadequate weaponry, accusing their superiors of leaving them at a disadvantage against the better-armed insurgents.
