₦52.26 billion. That is the staggering amount Nigerian financial institutions lost to fraud in 2024 alone, according to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). While the world looks toward cybercrime, a more traditional and devastating threat is surging: Document Forgery. With forged cheque losses skyrocketing by over 1,000% in early 2025, the Nigerian judiciary is turning to a new breed of “truth-seekers” to protect the economy.
‎
‎At the center of this battle is Chief Reginald Udunze, a veteran Forensic Document Examiner with 35 years of experience. On January 28, 2026, the courtroom of Hon. Justice C.I. Nwobodo in the Enugu State High Court became a classroom for this crucial science.

Chief Reginald Udunze

‎
‎Testifying as an expert witness in a landmark criminal trial, Chief Udunze, the Managing Director of Apex Forensic Science Laboratory, dismantled the most dangerous myth in forgery: that a “good” fake is a perfect copy.
‎
‎During a rigorous cross-examination, Udunze explained that every human signature is a “structural complex product” of years of neuromuscular modification. In simpler terms: your brain and muscles have a “biological blueprint” that you follow unconsciously whenever you sign your name.
‎
‎”A signature contains internal consistencies and master patterns which are inconspicuous to the writer and impossible for a forger to replicate,” Udunze testified.
‎
‎The core of Udunze’s testimony rested on the principle that “has since sent ripples through the Nigerian legal community. “Similarity is not identity.”
‎
‎In an exclusive interview following the court session, Udunze elaborated. “A forger draws a signature, but a genuine owner writes it. To the untrained personnel, a simulation looks identical because it mimics the shape. But to a forensic expert, the ‘rhythm’ is wrong. The pen pressure, the microscopic tremors and the internal consistency are missing.”

‎
‎The need for this expertise extends far beyond the banking halls. Statistics suggest that nearly 40% of all civil litigation cases in Southern Nigeria involve disputed land titles or forged deeds. For many Nigerians, a single forged signature has meant the loss of a family home or a lifelong investment.
‎
‎The adoption of Udunze’s evidence by Justice Nwobodo is great for the Nigerian Judiciary. We are living in a time where “forensic certainty” replaces the fallibility of human memory or visual guesswork.

‎
‎As criminals become more sophisticated, the role of the Apex Forensic Science Laboratory becomes more critical. By applying science to law, experts like Chief Udunze are proving that while a signature can be mimicked, the “Master Pattern” of the truth remains unique.
‎
In a country where billions are at stake, the message from the Enugu High Court is clear: The science of truth is no longer optional; it is the only straightforward way to safeguard justice.
