Nnewi community celebrates New Yam festival

The industrial town of Nnewi, Anambra State yesterday rolled out drums to celebrate her New Yam festival.

The Chairman of Nnewi town union, Sir Ugochuk­wu Udemezue in his wel­come address said that his administration is commit­ted to improving the festival in line with the prevailing human and environmental transformation, advance­ment and civilization tak­ing place in the community. Udemezue urged all resi­dents to imbibe the sense of peaceful coexistence and act as watchdog for their neighbours.

He congratulated the Nnewi indigenes in the USA for successfully con­ducting a convention which held in July.

The PPA Anambra gov­ernorship candidate, Mr Godwin Ezeemo at the oc­casion said that he would improve on the cultural val­ues and base of the state if he makes it to government house so as to make them international events.

The Anambra State Gov­ernor, Chief Willie Obiano represented by his Senior Special Adviser on budget and financial strategy, Hon Melie Onyejepu expressed the commitment of his ad­ministration to improving the lot of the people in the state.

The traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Dr KON Orizu III at the occasion prayed for peace and stabil­ity of the town, Anambra State and Nigeria.

The new yam festival would wind up on Satur­day.
