OAU Bans Lecturers from Holding Classes Before 8 AM and After 6 PM

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has officially banned lecturers from holding classes before 8:00 AM and after 6:00 PM.

This move follows student complaints about irregular academic schedules affecting their well-being.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by the university’s Registrar, K. A. Bakare, on 1 February 2025, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to official lecture hours.

The statement also reiterated the institution’s commitment to upholding a lecture-free week for students, in line with existing academic regulations.

The decision comes after The Great Ife Students’ Union condemned early morning lectures, late-night classes, and violations of the designated lecture-free week.

The union had previously called on the university administration to enforce policies ensuring a more structured and student-friendly academic schedule.

The new directive is expected to streamline lecture schedules and improve students’ academic experiences.

However, the university has yet to announce how it plans to monitor compliance and address any violations by lecturers.
