Obowo APC holds Emergency meeting, addresses Defection, Legislative council crisis

The leadership and critical stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State have held an Extraordinary Emergency Meeting in Owerri to deliberate on recent developments within the party and reaffirm their commitment to unity, discipline and stability.

The meeting was convened by Chief Longers Anyanwu, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Imo State, who stressed the need for responsible leadership and collective action in addressing issues that could affect the party’s cohesion.

The meeting, convened following emerging concerns within the party in recent days, brought together key leaders and stakeholders of the Obowo APC family.

Among those invited to the meeting were Rt. Hon. Chike Okafor, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibe, Chief Chris Okewulonu, Chief Alex Mbakwe, Prince Humphery Okeke, Barr. Obioma Ehiri, the Leader of the Legislative Council, members of the Legislative Council, Lady Love Ine, Dr. Godrick Anosike, Lady Patience Mbakwe, Dr. Ray Emerenini, Princess Nkechi Anyanwu Mbachu, Chief Ihechere and Dr. Japh Azubuine.

The meeting, held at Golden Vista Hotel, Owerri, on Tuesday, 1 September, 2026, considered critical issues affecting the party, including reports of the defection of some APC executives and its implications for the party in Obowo LGA, the purported resolution by members of the Legislative Council concerning their Leader, as well as other emerging developments with potential implications for the unity, cohesion and discipline of the APC in Obowo.

The stakeholders engaged in frank and constructive deliberations on the issues, with emphasis placed on the need for all party members and leaders to uphold the constitution, internal processes and established structures of the APC.

The party, however, cautioned against speculation, stressing that no individual or group had been officially established as responsible for the killing.

It consequently appealed to members and supporters to remain calm and law-abiding and warned against any attempt to take the law into their own hands.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity within the party and ensuring that individual disagreements do not undermine the collective interest of the APC in Obowo.

On reports that some APC members and executives had defected, the party leadership maintained that the development would not undermine its structure in Obowo.

Anyanwu described political movements as part of the dynamics of party politics, stressing that the strength of the APC would continue to rest on the commitment of its leaders, stakeholders and grassroots members.

“The APC has maintained political control of Obowo since 2011, making the local government one of its longstanding strongholds in Imo State,” Anyanwu said.

He urged party members to remain focused, consolidate existing structures and avoid allowing personal disagreements to undermine the collective interest of the party.

The communiqué of the meeting was also forwarded to His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodinma, CON, Governor of Imo State, as well as the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Imo State, the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, the Chief of Staff, Imo State Government, and the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, for their information and necessary attention.

The stakeholders further reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the party and resolving emerging challenges through dialogue, consultation and established party mechanisms.
