In recent times, a disturbing trend has emerged among landlords who rent out accommodation to students of Ogun State Institute of Technology Igbesa(OGITECH).

The students are faced with unfair and unjust attitudes from the very individuals who are supposed to provide them with a safe and comfortable living environment.

The plight of these students cannot be overlooked, as they now find themselves victims of exploitation, un announced evictions from their hostels, discrimination, and mistreatment. It is disheartening to see that some landlords have chosen to take advantage of their vulnerability due to the high demand for accommodation near educational institutions.

Exploitative rental prices are just the tip of the iceberg. Landlords deliberately inflate the cost of rent, knowing that students have limited options and are desperate for a place to stay. This puts an additional financial burden on the students and their families, who are already struggling to afford the exorbitant tuitions and other living expenses.

Additionally, the deplorable living conditions that some students are forced to endure in these rented accommodations are unacceptable. Nuisances such as leaky roofs, faulty plumbing, electrical hazards, and infestations of pests are rampant. Landlords often turn a blind eye to these issues, ignoring their responsibility to maintain the premises and provide a safe.

Some of the hostels affected are, Jafoson, Oyila, Goshen, Back of Onifade block industry, hostels opposite Petrocam and lot more.

A student of the institute who pleaded anonymity made it known to the 9NewsNigeria correspondent that the the landlord of Oyilla hostel at Igbesa has been tormenting student to leave the hostel immediately there rent is dues.

According to him he want to renovate his hostel and he want all the students out with the excuse of them not following his rules and wanting to add money to his house rent.

It was also reveled that, Student who tried to plead with him and ask him to give them time according to the constitution were threatening that if they don’t move out there load will be thrown out and he will go as far as involving his lawyer so no charges will be press against him.

The Student Union Speaker, RT HON Happiness Adikpe also frowns at the trending issue from landlords as he informed the Newsman that his Landlord has decided to increase a room to 100,000 if he wants to continue his stay in the hostel.

An Indegene of the town who pleaded anonymity said, “The Student Union Government leaders and Management should also play an active role in ensuring the well-being of their students. They should establish partnerships with reputable landlords and provide adequate resources to assist students in finding suitable accommodations. This would greatly reduce their vulnerability to unjust attitudes”.
