A series of crashes on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway left one person dead and another injured in the early hours of Friday, July 24, 2026, causing severe traffic congestion.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) advised motorists to remain patient and use alternative routes while emergency teams cleared the affected area.
The first crash occurred around 12:05 a.m. on the outbound lane to Ibadan. It involved five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna.
FRSC said preliminary findings linked the accident to excessive speed and loss of control. Of the seven men involved, five escaped unhurt, one was injured, while one died after becoming trapped beneath a truck.
As rescue operations were ongoing, another crash happened around 3:15 a.m. on the inbound lane into Lagos. The incident involved a commercial Mazda bus.
The FRSC attributed the second crash to brake failure. The injured driver was taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for treatment.
Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, and LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki condoled with the victim’s family and urged motorists, especially truck drivers, to inspect their vehicles before travelling.
Traffic officials advised motorists heading to Ibadan to use the Ikorodu-Sagamu route, while those travelling into Lagos should divert through the Lekki-Epe Expressway or the Ikorodu-Sagamu corridor until recovery operations are completed.
