A United States service member has been declared missing after Iranian forces shot down a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet in a major escalation of the ongoing Middle East conflict, 9News Nigeria reports.
The incident, which occurred deep inside Iranian territory, marks one of the most significant direct confrontations between U.S. and Iranian forces since the war began weeks ago. According to U.S. defence officials, the aircraft—operated by a two-person crew—was hit during combat operations, forcing both personnel to eject.
One of the crew members has since been rescued in a high-risk recovery mission involving U.S. special forces and military aircraft. However, the second service member remains unaccounted for, triggering an urgent and ongoing search-and-rescue operation amid hostile conditions.
Military sources indicate that the search effort is extremely sensitive, as there are fears Iranian forces or affiliated groups could locate the missing soldier first. Reports suggest Iran has intensified ground surveillance in the crash region, with local calls for civilians to assist in locating the downed airman.
The downing of the F-15E—a highly advanced U.S. strike aircraft—has also raised serious questions about Washington’s earlier claims of air superiority over Iranian airspace. Defence analysts note that despite sustained bombardments, Iran continues to deploy mobile air defence systems capable of targeting even sophisticated Western jets.

Further complicating the situation, additional U.S. aircraft involved in the rescue operation reportedly came under attack. At least two rescue helicopters were hit but managed to exit the area, while a separate A-10 warplane was also lost in related operations, although its pilot was safely recovered.
This development represents a symbolic and tactical blow to U.S. operations in the region. It is also the first confirmed instance of Iran successfully shooting down a U.S. fighter jet in the current conflict, underscoring the intensifying nature of the war.
As of the time of filing this report, the Pentagon has yet to release a full official statement on the incident. However, President Donald Trump has reportedly been briefed, as pressure mounts domestically over the rising human and material costs of the war.
With over a dozen U.S. personnel already confirmed dead and hundreds injured since the conflict escalated, the fate of the missing service member is now a critical concern for U.S. military command and could further shape the trajectory of the war in the coming days.
9News Nigeria reports that the incident is likely to heighten tensions further, with potential retaliatory actions expected as both sides continue to engage in one of the most volatile military confrontations in recent history.
