Onyeka Onwenu was a popular and very influential figure in the Nigerian literary scene, who is often regarded as the Elegant Stallion.
She was best known as an actress, singer, journalist and politician.
A native of Imo state, Mrs Onwenu grew up in an elite household, with her father being a notable education expert and political strategist who was once a Minister for Education and her mother, a traditional ruler and chieftain.
The prolific singer advanced her education in the United States of America, bagging a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Communication as well as a master’s degree in Media Studies.
She completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the Nigerian Television Authority in 1980.
Onwenu soon became and employee at the NTA, flourishing for her definitive documentary about corruption in Nigeria, titled, ‘Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches’.
However, sometime in the 1980’s, she pursued a career in music, with most of her songs self-written. Her first studio album was recorded in the United Kingdom.
Onwenu also had a successful stint in Nollywood, featuring in many movies and videos including, ‘Widow’s Cot’.
Beyond entertainment and showbizz, she was an active politician, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a former Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development under former President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
She also served as Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
Onwenu was a female activist with visual evidence of achievements, including protests against corruption, inequality, and human rights abuses.
Onyeka Onwenu was indeed a Nigerian gem and truth be told, her legacy would continue to live on through her music, films, and developmental efforts towards a better society.
